As the antithetical emotion, one would expect the smile to stand out in marked contrast to other expressions and indeed that is what we have found.
It is the only positive facial expression,
contrasting with FIVE negative expressions (fear, anger, disgust, sadness and contempt).
One can recognise that someone is smiling from a further distance than any of the negative facial expressions.
And when expressions are presented for only a fraction of a second, the smile is recognised more accurately than the negative emotional expressions.
